[PIKSI-L] SAP DB: SAP's open-source database

02.12.2002 / SAP DB: SAP's open-source database
Open for Business
Impressive performance, ease of use, low running costs - these are all
hallmarks of SAP DB, an open-source database that is developed,
delivered, and maintained by SAP. SAP DB is an alternative database
available to all customers. And through it, SAP is putting a new method
of collaborative, community-based software development to the test.

SAP AG has converted its database management system - SAP DB - into an
open-source system (www.sapdb.org). Since 2000, the solution has been
offered to users of mySAP.com as a free alternative to database systems
from other manufacturers, and the database source code has been
available for free use under a GNU General Public License (GPL).
Particularly in hosting, SAP is experiencing increasing success in
deploying SAP DB because of its low resource and administration
requirements. In the open-source environment, SAP DB is currently
constructed and rolled out by SuSE for other Linux platforms alongside
operating system platforms supported by SAP.
SAP AG has continued to develop SAP DB after the open-source release of
the database. SAP DB is offered for mySAP.com solutions as an equivalent
alternative to the systems of established database manufacturers with a
free-of-charge license. Although SAP DB was first optimized as a
database engine for SAP R/3, the application areas today reach far
beyond online transaction processing. The database management system
(DBMS) comes as an embedded engine in several dedicated application
solutions, including SAP liveCache (part of SAP Advanced Planner and
Optimizer in mySAP Supply Chain Management) and the SAP Content Server.
SAP liveCache is based on an object-oriented enhancement of SAP DB for
high-performance main-memory-based processing of network-type structures
- in this case, for planning tasks within the supply chain. As with the
SAP Content Server, the data store is no longer restricted to tabulated
information, but includes structured and unstructured documents. Thus,
SAP DB is compatible with increasingly significant Internet applications
that use a combination of mostly unstructured data - such as HTML sites,
pictures, or audio and video files - and that exchange information
through partly structured documents in XML format.
Customers who run non-SAP applications on SAP DB receive additional
free-of-charge online support via the SAP DB mailing list
(sapdb.general @ somewhere.in.the.world). The list is maintained by the SAP DB
team for database users to share experiences. This user community can
also conclude a Premium Support agreement, which gives full access to
the SAP support infrastructure.
